Growth Without Leadership Is Just More Chaos, Faster
A few people have asked me what got me the Silver Stevie for Mentor of the Year. In part one, I said it starts with belief. Here’s what comes after it.
Growth on its own isn’t enough
Most coaching in this space is about growth. Get more leads. Write more business. Scale faster. That’s fine as far as it goes.
But growth without leadership just means more chaos, faster. More clients, more staff and more moving parts, all still running through one tired owner.
And growth without risk management means you can build something impressive and lose it.
One owner, two years, two different jobs
A business owner I was coaching was leading reactively. Constant firefighting. Everything went through him.
Year 1: fix how the owner leads
We didn’t start with his team. We started with him, and how he made decisions under pressure.
When an owner leads from panic, the whole business runs on panic. Clear, calm decisions give everyone else something steady to work from.
Sales grew 130%.
Year 2: build leaders underneath him
Year 2 was different. We stopped working on him and started building leaders underneath him.
The result: annual sales grew by an average of 98% over the two years, in tough conditions. The team went from 6 to 15 people, and they bought their own office.
Why the order matters
Here’s the truth. That second year only worked because of the first.
You can’t develop leaders while you’re still the bottleneck. If every decision still needs you, your leaders are just people waiting for your answer.
Ask yourself:
- Does work slow down when you’re away for a week?
- Does your team bring you problems they could solve on their own?
- Do you make every call that matters, even the small ones?
If you said yes to any of these, start with yourself. Here’s how to stop being the bottleneck in your own business.
The part nobody wants to discuss
Everyone plans for growth. Almost nobody plans for what would take it away.
Before you push for your next big jump, look at what could undo it:
- One source of work. Most of your business comes from one referral partner, one lender or one big client.
- One person who knows everything. A key team member holds knowledge nobody else has.
- No buffer. A slow quarter, a run of clawbacks or a lost client would leave you short of cash.
- Gaps you haven’t checked. Your files and processes wouldn’t hold up if someone reviewed them tomorrow.
- You. If you were out for a month, the business would stall.
Before I coached full time, I spent 17 years in audit and risk management. It taught me one thing: what you build is only worth what you can keep.
Growth and protection aren’t opposites
Most owners only ever work on one of them. Growers chase the next target and hope nothing breaks. Protectors play it safe and wonder why nothing moves.
You need both. Leadership is what joins them. When you build leaders underneath you, the business can grow without you in every decision. And it won’t fall over when one person steps away, including you.
I’m not sharing this to impress you. I’m sharing it to impress upon you.
A question to sit with
Which one have you been ignoring: growth or protection?
Be honest with yourself. Then pick one thing from this article to work on before the year ends.
Let’s look at both
If you’re still the bottleneck, or you’re growing without a plan for what could take it away, let’s talk.
